Social Justice Event 25 Short Films
For my social Justice event I watched a series of short videos that had to the topic of race. Most of the videos ended up being interviews with people of various ethnic backgrounds. One video in particular that struck me was an interview titled "A conversation about growing up black." A statement by a 17 year old boy struck me as odd. He and his brother had gone outside and he was wearing his snowman Pajamas, he hadn't even left the immediate area of his house and wasn't even dressed properly when a cop stopped them. This reminded me of the All lives matter article by Kevin Roose, while no one was injured in the boys story it struck me as odd. Why should be stopped when he is obviously not suspicious has no place to conceal weapons or anything that could be considered illegal. People should not be accused, stopped or persecuted for doing nothing wrong.Man shoots at boy asking for Directions as I have named it is a story of a boy simply asking for directions and getting a reaction that was way over the top and could have cost him his life because he was judged unfairly.
The second video that stood out to me was a video that interviewed law enforcement on the issues of race. There was one officer that spoke that really irritated me. He was talking about how he would stop people in areas that they were "not supposed to be in." Everyone was instantly a suspect even when no harm was done. This reminded me of the article, short story... I'm not sure what it was that we read called "For the White Person Who Wants to Know How to Be My Friend". It reminded me of this because it was a bit about stereotyping people. Just because some people act a certain way or do a certain thing or look a certain way does not mean that they always act as you think they will. I found an article that relates to this to some extent. https://wgntv.com/2018/09/06/cops-detain-black-teen-riding-with-white-grandmother-after-hes-mistaken-for-robber/. The kid in this article get profiled because of race and the situation he is in much like the cop in the video did. Law enforcement need to have all the information and not make assumptions.
For the final video that stood out to me was one about a young latino male that was born in america. He spoke english, was born in the U.S. his parents were from the U.S. but even though he was american he was always labeled as Mexican or Mexican american. It reminded me of the Aria Article we read but almost in reverse. People expected him to be more latino or Mexican when he was american. https://www.cnn.com/2012/11/30/opinion/navarrette-mexican-american/index.html the article I have attached explains how always being labeled as something can affect how you act and perceive things. the Labels we give ourselves and others can be more harmful than you may think.
